December 2008

Welcome to the home of curling in Wales.

The Deeside Ice Rink has been home base to the Welsh Curling Association since it was established in 1974 and its affiliation to the Royal Caledonian Curling Club in 1976.

The R.C.C.C. (Scotland) is the mother club of curling since its foundation in 1836. It set down the rules and etiquette of the sport which was the basis on which the World Curling Federation formulated the rules which now govern the sport.

The W.C.A. is an active member of the World Curling Federation and the European Curling Federation.

The W.C.A. is the governing body for the sport in Wales. Deeside is the only rink in Wales in which curling takes place. The responsibility for curling fixtures at Deeside falls to the First Province of Wales, which in effect is the same membership as the W.C.A.

The F.P.o.W is managed by a committee of elected members i.e. Chairman, Vice Chairman, Past Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Games Secretary, Membership Officer, Web Master and representatives of the clubs. This committee meets regularly to manage and plan the events and schedules for the year.

The clubs are:

Alyn Valley Connah’s Quay Deeside

Mid Wales Sealand Wheelies

The W.C.A. is also managed by a committee of elected members i.e. President, Past President, Secretary, Treasurer and Development Officer. Two representatives are also elected to attend the E.C.F. and the W.C.F.’s Annual General and Semi Annual General Assemblies.

The W.C.A. committee meets about four times a year and is responsible for managing international events, making applications for grants, entering teams into international World and European championships.

Curling is a winter sport and starts at Deeside at the beginning of September and finishes at the end of March/beginning of April on Monday evenings between 5.40pm and 10.00pm (excluding half terms, Christmas & New Year). Junior coaching from 4.00pm.

Curling is a very socially orientated sport which follows international rules of play, and a code of ethics based on fair play. No quarter is shown by a team to its opponents but it never seeks to be-little its opponents and always compliments a curler on a well played shot and whenever possible joins in socializing with the opposition after a game. Individual clubs often organize social events. The Burns’ Night Supper is one of the highlights of the calendar.

The W.C.A sends teams to a number of International competitions including European and World events. In 2007, Wales won the European Mixed Curling Championships in Madrid, Spain. The team composed of Adrian Meikle, Lesley Carol, Andrew Tanner, Blair Hughes and Chris Wells defeated Denmark 6:5 in the finals at Palacio de Hielo and won the country's first ever European title!
