Guide to Changing Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers

Guide to Changing Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers

An improper fraction is a fraction whose numerator (top number) is larger than its denominator (bottom number).

Example:

*To turn an improper fraction into a mixed number, divide the numerator by the denominator. Write your new whole number big to the left, your remainder will be your numerator, and the denominator will stay the same.

Ex. 1 Ex. 2

Step 1: Divide the numerator by the denominator.

Step 2: Write the whole number answer big to the left, make your remainder the numerator and the denominator will stay the same as before.

9 2 = 4 r1

A mixed number is a fraction that is greater than 1 whole. A mixed number will have a whole number followed by a fraction.

Example: 1

*To turn a mixed number into an improper fraction, multiply the denominator by the whole number and add the numerator. Put the answer on top of the original denominator.

Ex. 1 Ex. 2

Step 1: Multiply the whole number times the denominator of the fraction.

Step 2: Add the numerator of the fraction to the answer to step 1

Step 3: Write the answer to step 2 as the numerator and keep the denominator the same as the mixed number.

1 1 x 7 = 7

1 7 + 4 = 11

3 3 x 5= 15

3 15 + 2= 17
