Covenant of the Church

Covenant of the Church

Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God, to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; we do now in the presence of God, angels, and this assembly, solemnly and most joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ.

We purpose, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love; to strive for advancement of this church in knowledge, holiness, and comfort; to promote its prosperity and spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrines; to give it a sacred preeminence over all institutions of human origin; to contribute cheerfully and regularly, as God has prospered us, to the support of the ministry, the expense of the church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the Gospel throughout the nations.

We also purpose to maintain family and private devotions; to train our children according to the Word of God; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our conduct; to avoid all gossip, backbiting, and unrighteous anger; to abstain from all forms of activity which dishonor our Lord Jesus Christ, cause stumbling to a fellow believer or hinder the winning of a soul to Christ; to be zealous in our efforts to advance the cause of Christ, our Savior; and to give Him preeminence in all things.

We further purpose to encourage one another in the blessed hope of our Lord’s return; to watch over one another in brotherly love; to remember each other in prayer; to aid each other in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and courtesy and in speech; to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, and being mindful of the rules of our Savior, seek it without delay.

We moreover purpose that when we remove from this place we will, as soon as possible, unite with some other church of like faith and order, where we carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word. In the event there is no such church, we shall seek, with the Lord’s help, to establish one.

Preamble

Placing our faith wholly in the Lord Jesus Christ for our salvation, and believing in the teachings of the Scripture as the complete and verbally inspired word of the living God, we have affiliated ourselves with one another as a body of immersed believers, and adopt this constitution as a declaration of our convictions so that we may carry on the Lord’s work decently and in order.

Article I

Section 1

Name

This congregation of believers shall be known as

Lighthouse Baptist Church of Kodiak

Section 2

Purpose

  1. This congregation is organized as a church to evangelize the unsaved by proclaiming the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ; educate believers in a manner consistent with the requirements of the Holy Scripture. The church may also ordain and license men to the Gospel ministry; maintain missionary activities in the United States and any foreign country; and engage in any other ministry that the Church may decide, from time to time, to pursue in obedience to the will of God.

  1. This congregation is organized as a church exclusively for charitable , religious, and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501 (c) 3 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (or the corresponding provision of any future Untied States Revenue Law), including but not limited to, for such proposes, the establishing and maintaining of religious worship, the building, maintaining and operating of churches, parsonages, day schools, chapels, radio stations, television stations, rescue missions, print shops, day care centers, camps, nursing homes, missionary activities, Bible Institutes/colleges, and any other ministries that the church may be lead of God to establish.

Article II

Associations

This church shall be an independent, fundamental, autonomous Baptist church, subject only to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church. As such, it cannot join anything outside itself. It may cooperate and associate with other Biblical groups of like faith and practice on a voluntary basis only, and for the purposes of fellowship and the promotion of the Gospel only. There shall be no cooperation with any group that permits the presence of apostates or apostasy, or endorses with those that permit the presence of apostates or apostasy. (Apostates or apostasy is defined as those who have forsaken or abandoned the fundamentals of the faith).

Article III

Statement of Faith

This Statement of Faith does not exhaust the extent of our faith. The Bible itself is the sole source of all we believe. We do believe, however, that the forgoing Statement of Faith accurately represents the teaching of the Bible, and therefore is binding upon all members.

Section 1 – Scriptures

1. We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be the verbally inspired Word of God. The Scriptures are completely free from error, or contradiction, and totally incapable of erring. They are the final authority for faith and life. The sixty-six books of the Old and New Testament are the complete and divine revelation of God to Man. The Scriptures shall be interpreted according to their normal grammatical and historical meaning, unless the context warrants otherwise.

2. We further believe that the texts which are the providentially preserved copies of the original autographs of the Bible are the Masoretic Hebrew text for the Old Testament, and the Textus Receptus greek text for the New Testament, and that the King James Version of the English Bible is a true and faithful translation of these two texts. Therefore, the King James Version of the Bible shall be the official and only translation used by the church. (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Psalms 12:6-7; Deuteronomy 4:12; Proverbs 30:5-6; Revelations 22: 18-19).

Section 2 – Dispensationalism

We believe that the Scriptures interpreted in their natural, literal sense reveal divinely determined dispensations (or ages) which define man’s responsibilities in successive ages. These dispensations are not ways of salvation, but rather are divinely ordered periods of time by which God directs man according to his purpose. Three of these dispensations – the Age of Law, the Age of the Church, and the Age of the Kingdom – are subjects of detailed revelation of Scriptures.(Genesis 1:28; 1 Corinthians 9:17; 2 Corinthians 3:9-18; Ephesians 1:10; 3:2-10; Colossians 1:24-25; Revelations 20:2-6).

Section 3 – The True God

We believe in one God, existing in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, each being identical in their nature, power, and glory; each having the same attributes and perfection. We believe in God the Father, perfect in holiness, boundless in love, infinite in wisdom, and measureless in power. We also believe that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men, that He hears and answers payers and that He saves from sin and death for all who come to Him through Jesus Christ, His Son.

(Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; John 14:10, 26; Isaiah 6:3;

John 3:16; 1 Corinthians 1:21-31).

Section 4 – The Person and Work of Christ

1. We believe that Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man, without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful men. (Isaiah 7:14, 9:6; Luke1:35;

John 1:1-2, 14; 2 Corinthians 5:19-21; Galatians 4:4-5; Philippians 2:5-8).

2. WE believe that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption through His death on the cross as a representative, vicarious, substitution sacrifice; and, that our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead.

(Acts 2:18-36; Romans 3:24-25; 1 Peter 1:3-5, 2:24; Ephesians 1:7).

3. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ ascended to Heaven, and is now exalted at the right hand of God, where, as our High Priest, He fulfills the ministry of Representative, Intercessor, and Jesus Christ is the Supreme Overseer of the Church.(Acts 1:9-10; Hebrews 9:24, 7:25; Romans 8:34; I John 2:1-2; Ephesians 4:15, 5:23).

4. We believe that Christ will return personally and visibly, first to receive the believers unto Himself, commonly referred to as the Rapture ( 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17), and then again at the Second Coming, when He will establish His kingdom on earth.

(Matthew 25:31-34).

Section 5 – The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine person, equal with God the Father and God the Son, and of the same nature; that He was active in the creation; that He convicts of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; that He bears witness to the truth of the Gospel in preaching and testimony; that He is the agent I the new birth through His calling and regenerating; that He baptizes, indwells, seals, guides, teaches and fills the believers. (Matthew 28:18-20; Genesis 1:2; John 16:7-11; Titus 3:5; 1 Corinthians 12:13, 3:16; Ephesians 4:30; John 16:13; 1 John 2:27; Acts 2:4).

Section 6 – The Total Depravity of Man

We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that in Adam’ s sin the human race fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God; and that man is totally depraved and of himself, utterly unable to remedy his lost condition. (Genesis 1:26-27; Romans 3:22-23; 5:12; 6:23; Ephesians 2:1-3; 4:17-19).

Section 7 – Salvation

We believe that salvation is the gift of God brought to man by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, whose precious blood was shed on Calvary for the forgiveness of sins. (John 1:12; Ephesians 1:7; 2:8-10; 1 Peter 1:18-19).

Section 8 – The Eternal Security and Assurance of Believers

  1. We believe that all the redeemed, once saved, are kept by God’s power and are thus secure in Christ forever. (John 6:37-40; 10:27-30; Romans 8:1, 38-39; 1 Corinthians 1:4-8; 1 Peter 1:4-5).

  2. We believe that it is the privilege of believers to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation through the testimony of God’s Word, which clearly forbids the use of Christian liberty as an occasion to the flesh. (Romans 13:13-14; Galatians 5:13; Titus2:11-15).

Section 9 – The Church

  1. We believe that s Scriptural church is a visible assembly of baptized (immersed) believer; associated by covenant of faith and fellowship of the Gospel; observing the ordinances of Christ; governed by His laws; exercising the gifts, rights and privileges invested in them by His Word; and that its officers are pastors and deacons, whose qualifications, claims and duties are clearly defined in the Scriptures. We believe that the church was founded by our Lord Jesus Christ during His earthly ministry, and purchased with His own blood for the primary purpose of glorifying God.

  2. We believe it is the task of the church to proclaim the redemptive story to the entire world. We hold that the local church has the absolute right of self-government, free from the interference of hierarchy of individuals of organizations ; that the one and only superintendent is Christ through the Holy Spirit; that it is the Scriptural for true churches to cooperate with each other in contending for the faith and for the furtherance of the Gospel; that each local church is the sole judge of the measure and method of this cooperation; and that on all matters of membership, of policy, of government, of discipline, of benevolence, the will of this church is final, based upon the Word of God. (Ephesians 1:22-23; 3:1-6; 4:22; 5:23-24; 1 Corinthians 12:12-13; 11:2; Acts 2:41-42; 15:13; 20:17-28; 1 Timothy 3:1-7, 8-13; Colossians 1:18).

Section 10 – Separation

We believe that all the saved should live in such a manner as not to bring reproach upon their Lord and Savior; and that separation from all religious apostasy, all worldly and sinful pleasures, practices and associations is commanded of God. (Romans 12:1-2; 14:13; 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1; 2 Timothy 3:1-5; 1 John 2:15-17; 2 John 9-11).

Section 11 – The Second Advent of Christ

We believe in that “blessed hope,” the personal, imminent return of Christ, who will rapture His Church prior to the seven year tribulation period. At the end of the Tribulation, Christ will personally and visibly return with His saints, to establish His earthly Messianic Kingdom which was promised to the nation of Israel. (Psalms 89: 3-4; Daniel 2:31-45; Zechariah 14:4-11; 1 Thessalonians 1:10; 4:13-18; Titus 2:13; Revelations 3:10; 19:11-16; 20:1-6).

Section 12 – The Eternal State

  1. We believe in the bodily resurrection of all men, the saved to eternal life, and the unsaved to the judgment and everlasting punishment (Matthew 25:46; John 5:28-29; 11:25-26; Revelations 20:5-6, 12-13).

  2. We believe that the souls of the redeemed are, at death, absent from the body and present with the Lord, where in conscious bliss they await the first resurrection, when spirit, soul and body are reunited to be glorified forever with the Lord. (Luke 23:42; 2 Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:23; 3:21; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17; Revelations 20:4-6).

  3. We believe that the souls of unbelievers remain, after death in conscious punishment and torment until the second resurrection, when with the soul and body reunited they shall appear at the Great White Throne Judgment, and shall be cast into the Lake of Fire not to be annihilated, but suffer everlasting conscious punishment and torment. (Matthew 25:41-46; MK. 9:43-48; 25:41; Revelations 20:10).

Section 13 – The personality of Satan

We believe that Satan is a real and literal fallen angelic being, the author of sin and the cause of the Fall of Man; that he is the open and declared enemy of God and man; and that he shall be eternally punished in the Lake of Fire. (Job 1:6-7; Isaiah 14:12-17; Matthew 4:2-11; 25:41; Revelation 20:10).

Section 14 – Creation

We believe that God created the universe in six literal, 24-hour periods. We reject evolution, the gap theory, the Day-Age theory, and Theistic Evolution and any other unscriptural theories or origin. (Genesis 1-2; Exodus 20:11).

Section 15 – Civil Government

We believe that God has ordained and created all authority consisting of three basic institutions: the home, the church and the state. Every person is subject to these authorities, but all (including the authorities themselves) are answerable to God and governed by His Word. God has given each institution specific Biblical responsibilities with the understanding that no institution has the right to infringe upon the other. The home, the church and the state are equal and sovereign in their respective, Biblically assigned spheres of responsibility under God. (Romans 13:1-7; Ephesians 5:22-24; Hebrews 13:17; 1 Peter 3:13-14).

Section 16 – Human Sexuality

We believe that God has commanded that no sexual activity be engaged in outside of marriage between a man and woman. We believe that any form of homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality, bestiality, incest, fornication, adultery and pornography are sinful perversions of God’s gift of sex. (Genesis 2:24; 19:5,13; 26:8-9; Leviticus 18:1-30; Romans 1:26-29; 1 Corinthians 5:1; 6:9; 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; Hebrews 13:4).

Section 17 – Divorce and Remarriage

We believe that God hates divorce and intends marriage to last until one spouse dies. Divorce and remarriage is regarded as adultery except on the grounds of fornication. Although divorced persons or divorced and remarried persons may hold positions of service in the church and be greatly used of God for Christian service, they may not be considered for the offices of pastor or deacon. (Malachi 2:14-17; Matthew 19:3-12; Romans 7:1-3; 1 Timothy 3:2,12; Titus 1:6).

Section 18 - Abortion

We believe that human life begins at conception and that the unborn child is a living human being. Abortion constitutes the unjustified, unexcused taking of the unborn human life. Abortion is murder. We reject any teaching that abortion of pregnancies due to rape, incest, birth defects, gender selection, birth control, or the mental well being of the mother are acceptable (Job 3:16; Psalms 51:5; 139:14-16; Isaiah 24:44; 49:1;

Jeremiah 1:5; 20:15-18; Luke 1:44).

Section 19 – Missions

We believe that God has given the church a great commission to proclaim the gospel to all nations so that there might be a great multitude from every nation, tribe, ethnic group, and language group who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. As ambassadors of Christ we must use all available means to go to the foreign nations and not wait for them to come to us. It shall be the policy of this church to support only missions and missionaries engaged principally in evangelization and establishment of indigenous local churches. They shall be known to be Bible-believing churches in practice and in hearty agreement with our doctrine and practice as represented by the Church Covenant, Constitution, and Articles of Faith. (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15; Luke 24:46-48; John 20:21; Acts 1:8; 2 Corinthians 5:20).

Section 20 – Lawsuits between Believers

We believe that Christians are prohibited from bringing civil lawsuits against other Christians or the church to resolve personal disputes. We believe the church possesses all the resources necessary to resolve personal disputes between members. We do believe, however, that a Christian may seek compensation for injuries from another Christian’s insurance company as ling as the claim is pursued without malice or slander. (1 Corinthians 6:1-8; Ephesians 4:31-32).

Section 21 – Giving

We believe that every Christian, as a steward of God’s wealth entrusted to him, is obligated to support his local church financially. We believe that God has established the tithe as a basis for giving, but that every Christian should also give other offerings sacrificially and cheerfully to the support of the church, the relief of those in need, and spreading of the Gospel. We believe that a Christian relinquishes all rights to direct the use of the tithe or offerings once the gift has been made. (Genesis 14:20; Proverbs 3:9-10; Acts 4:34-37 1 Corinthians 16:2; 2 Corinthians 9:6-7; Galatians 6:6; Ephesians 4:28; 1 Timothy 5:17-18; 1 John 3:17).

When a member becomes aware of an offense of such magnitude that it hinders spiritual growth and testimony, he is to go alone to the offending party and seek to restore his brother. Before he goes, he should first examine himself. When he goes, he should go with a spirit of humility and have the goal of restoration.

  2. If reconciliation is not reached, a second member (the Pastor or a Deacon may be a wise choice of witness in such circumstances) is to accompany the one seeking to resolve the matter. This second step should also be preceded by self-examination, and exercised in a spirit of humility with the goal of restoration.

  3. If the matter is still unresolved after the steps outlined in subsections (1) and (2) have been taken, the matter shall go before the church, the church shall recommend to the members that they, after self-examination, make an effort to go to the offending member and seek that member’s restoration.

( Matthew 18:15-20; Romans 16:17-18; 1 Corinthians 5:1-13; 2 Corinthians 2:1-11; Galatians 6:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:14; 2 Thessalonians 3:6, 10-15; 1 Timothy 5:19-20; Titus 3:10-11).

  7. Keep and maintain adequate and correct accounts of the church’s properties and business transactions including accounts of its assets, liabilities, receipts, disbursements and capital.

  10. Serve as treasure of the corporation.

Section 5 – Duties of all Officers

  1. All officers shall prepare a written report of their work for the annual church administration meeting and shall surrender any records in their possession to the minister of records at the close of their term of office to be filed as permanent record of their work of the church. All records are the property of the church and must be kept in the church office.

  2. Any officer who neglects his duty as outlined in the bylaws for a period of two months may be removed by the Pastor (or Deacons in the absence of a Pastor) and another may be appointed to serve the unexpired term.

Section 6 – Installation of Officers

A public installation service in which all newly elected officers of the church are to be dedicated to their respective offices and the ordination of newly elected deacons shall be held at a public church service flowing their election.

Section 7 – The Selection and Installation of a Pastor

In the event of the pastor’s death, disciplinary removal, or resignation the selection of a new pastor is the responsibility for the church in determining God’s will. It is a very important act of the church because its leadership determines so much the course to be taken by the church. A man may be qualified yet not suited to a particular church- a man may be suited, but not qualified. It is not for any individual, committee, board, or denominational headquarters to appoint a pastor. The appointment of a pastor over a church in such a way is a serious violation of the independence of the church.

The pastor is to be God called (1 Timothy 1:12) Spirit led (Acts 20:28) and Church elected (Acts 1:23-26). When a vacancy exists, the following procedures should be adopted:

PRAY- The whole church must pray about such an important matter, not only at the first, but through all stages of the selection of a pastor.

SEEK- The church should seek out possible candidates to fill the pastorate. There are a number of ways this can be done.

  1. The advisement of the retiring pastor. If the previous pastor is leaving the church on mutually agreeable terms, his advice should be sought and seriously considered. After all, he best of all should know the needs of the church.

  2. A pulpit committee. When a vacancy occurs the church may appoint a certain number of members (perhaps 5 or 7, which should include the deacons and other devout members) to undertake the task of locating possible candidates. It should be understood that such a group has no authority except to act on behalf of the church, and for this reason the use of the title “committee” is possibly unwise. Perhaps “Pastoral Search Team” would be better.

  3. The advice of other pastors of other churches of like faith and order may be of help in selecting a new pastor.

CONSIDER- The whole church should have the opportunity to meet and consider all possible candidates for the pastorate. This can effectively be done by a practice sometimes known as “candidating” where the various nominees are given opportunity to preach and answer questions. Care must be taken not to allow this practice to become a “talent contest”.

ELECT- Having considered a qualified candidate, the church then votes to choose its pastor with regard to the church By-Laws voting age, majority percentage needed, and requirements of membership.

CALL- Once the decision has been made the church then officially calls the man to its pastorate. These steps can be noted in the selection of Matthias to the bishopric vacated by Judas in Acts 1:15-26.
