Reduced Lateral Separation Minima (RLAT) within the North Atlantic Airspace – Phase 1

From: 17/09/2015

To: 10/12/2015

Applicability

AD

FCM

FPL

  1. Introduction

Reduced Lateral Separation (RLAT) will allow aircraft to be separated laterally within the North Atlantic Airspace by a minimum of 25 Nm, improving the efficiency of North Atlantic operations.

In practice, flights will be separated by ½ degree of latitude rather than the 1 degree currently applied between suitably equipped aircraft.

As a result more aircraft will be able to fly at their optimum levels thus reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Phase 1 of RLAT trial within Shanwick/Gander airspace is planned to commence on 12th Nov 2015. It will consist in the introduction of a single uni-directional track between the core OTS tracks.

Phase 2 of the trial, which will see reduced lateral separation be expanded across all organised tracks, is expected to follow “within a year” of Phase 1 introduction.

The final phase which would see the expansion of the trial across the entire Shanwick/Gander airspace will follow later.

  1. RLAT Operations

    1. Eligibility

Operators wishing to flight plan in RLAT operations shall ensure that flights meet the following CNS (Communication, Navigation and Surveillance) requirements:

Communication: CPDLC equipped

Navigation: MNPS equipped, RNP4 approved

Surveillance: ADS-C equipped

It is important to note that IFPS will not perform a check between the CNS requirements and flight planning in RLAT operations.

    1. RLAT Trial area of operations

RLAT trial Phase 1 consists in the addition of a single un-directional track in between 2 tracks as shown below:

    1. AIRAC 1512 (12th of November)

Two Oceanic fixes (LUSEN, ORTAV) and their associated landfall fixes (ELKOG, ODPEX) are introduced at the Scottish/Shanwick boundary.

Two Oceanic fixes (UMLER, BUNAV) and their associated landfall fixes (UMOXA, TIVLU) are introduced at the Brest/Shanwick boundary.

RAD Appendix 4 is adapted to reflect the additional points and their corresponding RAD units.

Eastbound and Westbound OTS tracks contain an additional single track in between two core tracks as shown previously.
