Smoke and Mirrors

Spell category: Elemental Manipulation

Spell type: Physical

Range: LOS

Target number: 4

Duration: Sustained

Drain Code: 1/2F+1(M)

Spell creates a mirrored surface out of atmospheric humidity and condensation. If cast as an exclusive spell, it can not be used as a targeting aid for other spells, unless a different mage uses it.

Atmospheric conditions modify the target number. The base target number of 4 assumes a climate controlled condition such as a corporate office. Very dry or sterile conditions (such as an abandoned building or acclimatized laboratory) would make the target number 6, whereas a very humid condition or even light rain (heavy rain would actually affect the mirror in a negative way, causing constant ripples and distortions, see Clarity below) might make it a 3 or even 2, if the GM thinks the conditions are right. This spell is an excellent solution to the line of sight problem with spellcasting. The caster can move this mirror around to any location or angle within a range of (Magic Rating) x (Force) in meters, in a spherical radius. Even though the spell caster will still have the +2 for sustained spells negative modifier, the usefulness of this spell is well worth it. Remember that if you cast a spell that the effect travels physically through space (such as elemental manipulation spells) the mirror is affected by the spell, which may damage or destroy the mirror. However, even if the mirror is destroyed, it is still considered fully effective for the purposes of casting the spell that destroyed it; elemental manipulation spells move fast enough that once it’s moving, you shouldn’t have to worry about losing line of sight.

The force that the spell is cast at determines:

Clarity: Cast at force 5 or lower, the difference is a negative modifier for spellcasting at persons or objects seen thru mirror of 6-F (force)

Negative modifier for detailed examination as above is 10-F

Negative mod for non-magical targeting (such as indirect weapons) is 8-F

Strength: Mirror can be attacked with physical based spells and attacks. These attacks ripple or disrupt the image for (base power of attack – force of spell) in phases, and increase the target number modifier (based on clarity) by that same number as for phases spell is disrupted.

Atmospheric effects such as rain, wind, etc. effect the stability and clarity of the mirror. Gamemasters should apply a -1 to -3 modifier as they see fit.
