Pulse Innovation Project

Grants Available for Innovative Clinical Nutrition Research Related to Pulses in Human Health and Health Promotion

Description:

The goal of the Pulse Innovation Project (PIP), head-quartered at Pulse Canada, is to create new market opportunities for pulses (beans, peas, lentils, and chickpeas) in North America by highlighting and leveraging their nutritional and health benefits. Approximately one-half of the project’s three year funding, received from the Government of Canada under the Science and Innovation program of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), has been allocated to support clinical trials related to pulses and human health. The PIP research grants will provide a contribution of up to $250,000 per project including indirect costs (up to 15%) for a period of 18 months for approximately 6-8 research projects. Projects must be completed by March 31, 2008.1

The deadline for receipt of Expression of Interest is Monday, March 27th, 2006.

The PIP research grants are intended to foster innovative human clinical research that can potentially benefit the pulse industry through increased awareness and consumption of pulses and/or targeting commercial opportunities. Critical reviews of the research on pulses and cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, obesity and cancer are currently underway and will be used to define research priorities for the pulse industry. This pre-screening phase involves an Expression of Interest (EOI), where researchers are asked to demonstrate their capabilities for research in the above areas. Those researchers who are successful in meeting the review criteria for the EOI as outlined below will be asked to submit a full proposal for priority projects identified by the PIP following the critical reviews.

In accordance with the contribution agreement between Pulse Canada and AAFC, the proposed research project must include an experimental human study (planned intervention with contemporaneous assignment of treatment and non-treatment). Treatments must be whole pulses (beans, peas, lentils) and/or flours or commercially available pulse fractions (pea fibre, pea protein, pea starch). 2

Projects funded through the PIP must adhere to Health Canada and FDA standards for acceptable evidence, meeting one of the following levels:

  1. Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, with sufficient power, appropriately analyzed.

  2. Randomized, but blindness not achieved.

  3. Non-randomized, but with good control of confounding variables and well conducted in other respects.

Collaboration among universities, institutions and/or organizations (national and international) is encouraged. Principal investigators from non-Canadian institutions are eligible to receive funding, however we encourage research projects to be associated in part with universities or other institutions (federal or provincial) in Canada. The PIP research proposal review committee will look favorably upon applicants with a demonstrated ability to leverage funds.

Application Procedure:

The review of grant requests is a two-phase process:

(a) A pre-proposal phase, which involves the submission of an Expression of Interest (EOI); and

(b) A proposal phase, which requires the submission of a full research proposal by those researchers who are notified by Pulse Canada of their success in the pre-proposal phase.

Pre-Proposal Phase, Expression of Interest

Because the critical reviews that will define the research priorities for the pulse industry are still in progress, an Expression of Interest must be submitted and approved before full proposals will be requested. The guidelines are:

  1. Background and expertise of the principal investigator (s) including previous experience with human clinical trials and ability to receive human ethics approval, abilities of the associated research team including available laboratory techniques and methodologies;

  2. Research area of interest for this project;

  3. Capabilities of the institution including equipment and clinical trial facilities;

  4. Potential for collaboration with other institutions, food industry and/or health organizations;

  5. Current sources of funding, potential for leveraging funds and potential for applicant to provide cash or in-kind contributions.

Due Date

Deadline for receipt of Expression of Interest is Monday, March 27th, 2006, 17:00 CST. Submissions can be sent via mail, e-mail or fax.

Review Criteria
Expressions of Interest will be evaluated according to the following criteria:

Full Proposals

Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the Expression of Interest by May 5th, 2006. Successful applicants will be requested to submit full proposals. The deadline for submitting full proposals is June 30th, 2006. The research awards will be announced by July 28th, 2006.

Expressions of Interest and requests for additional information should be addressed to:

1Funds must be dispersed by March 31, 2008 with the possibility of final reports being submitted shortly thereafter.

2 Due to time constraints, treatments must not require approval by the Natural Health Products Directorate, Health Canada.
