Results of the Louisiana Purchase


Instructions: Below you will find a list of sixteen (16) results of Thomas Jefferson’s decision to purchase Louisiana Territory from the French. Try to organize these results into the four categories below: geographical, political, economic, and social. Write the appropriate numbers in each box. (You may use a number more than once if you think it fits into two categories.)


  1. The decision to purchase Louisiana doubled the land of the United States.


  1. Thomas Jefferson decided to buy land for the United States. This was NOT in the Constitution. This began a tradition of the loose interpretation of the Constitution.


  1. The Louisiana Purchase ended the threat of a French Empire near the young United States.


  1. Fifteen new states, carved out of the Louisiana Territory, would eventually be added to the United States of America.

  2. The United States now controlled the important port city of New Orleans.


  1. The United States now contained the Mississippi, Missouri, and Arkansas rivers.


  1. Politicians in the United States would soon be fighting over whether or not to have slavery in the new territory/states.


  1. Western farmers would be able to trade along the Mississippi River again.


  1. The United States owned more land that was good for farming and fur trapping.


  1. The United States would become a more powerful country.


  1. Many Americans would move west to live in the new territory.


  1. Thomas Jefferson hired explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to map these new American lands.


  1. The Rocky Mountains became the western border of the United States.


  1. The United States gained access to the Gulf of Mexico.


  1. Pioneers living in the Louisiana Territory would work hard to overcome the challenges of building new lives.


16. Native Americans living in the Louisiana Territory would be displaced (moved) by the United States government.
