Los Verbos “Ser” y “Estar”
Ser vs. Estar. A few adjectives have different meanings depending upon which form of "to Be" you use. Generally, if you use Ser, the adjective is a characteristic of the person or thing you are describing; whereas if you use Estar, it is a description of a mood or appearance.
SER is PERmanent = Who you are and what you are
yo soy
tú eres
él es
ella es
usted es
nosotros somos
ellos son
ellas son
ustedes son
Uses:
Nationality or origin – Mi prima es peruana. Ella es de Lima.
Profession – Ella es abogada. Ella es una buena abogada.
Physical traits – Paula es rubia. Es joven.
Basic personality traits – Eres una persona simpática.
Possession - ¿De quién es el libro? Es de Juan.
Time, date, and day – Es la una. Hoy es el cuatro de julio. Son las tres.
Religion – Soy católica. Soy hebreo.
Essential qualities – La puerta es de madera.
The location of a one-time event – El concierto es en el estadio.
ESTAR is Temporary = How you are and where you are

Uses:
Physical condition – Paco está enfermo. No está bien.
Feelings and emotions – Él está preocupado por su salud.
Location (both permanent and temporary) - Felipe está en el hospital que está en
la Calle Colón.
“ing” (the present progressive tense) – Yo estoy hablando ahora.
Some adjectives may change meanings or connotations according to whether they are used
with ser or estar.
1. ser = inherent characteristic or norm
estar = characteristic subject to change.
El hielo es frío. Ice is (naturally) cold.
El té está frío. The tea is cold (but should be hot)
2. ser = permanent trait
estar = temporary condition
Enrique es malo. (He’s a bad person)
Felipe está malo. (He’s sick)
3. ser = objective reality
estar = appearance
Marta es joven. (Marta is young [5 years old])
Su abuela está joven. (Her grandmother looks young)
