DUE: TUE. 2/28 Repaso rápido: the preterite tense
You have learned that the preterite tense is used to convey simple past actions
in Spanish. Regular verbs are conjugated as follows in the preterite tense:
hablar aprender escribir
yo hablé aprendí escribí
tú hablaste aprendiste escribiste
Ud./él/ella habló aprendió escribió
nosotros/nosotras hablamos aprendimos escribimos
vosotros/vosotras hablasteis aprendisteis escribisteis
Uds./ellos/ellas hablaron aprendieron escribieron
Remember that -ar and -er verbs do not have stem changes in the preterite
tense. Stem-changing verbs that end in -ir require a change in the Ud./él/ella
and Uds./ellos/ellas forms.

dormir (ue, u): dormí, dormiste, durmió, dormimos, dormisteis, durmieron

Repaso rápido: preterite vs. imperfect tense
A sentence in Spanish may contain various combinations of the preterite and
imperfect. For example, a sentence may have several verbs in the preterite
tense if you state a sequence of actions.
Salí de casa, fui a la escuela y empecé a estudiar.
Formula: preterite + y + preterite
A sentence may also include a verb in the preterite tense and another in the
imperfect tense. The imperfect tense is used to describe a repeated action or
an ongoing situation. Use the preterite to state what happened during the
repeated or ongoing action.
Nosotros comíamos cuando Alejandro llegó.
Formula: imperfect + cuando + preterite
Two or more verbs in the imperfect can describe simultaneous actions or
conditions.
Clara estudiaba mientras Ana jugaba.
Formula: imperfect + mientras + imperfect
